Go is thought to be the world's oldest board game, originating in Northern China about 3000 years ago. It is still widely played in China, and is also popular in Japan and Korea. The Japanese tradition has been the most influential amongst Western go players.

Both short term tactics and long term strategy are involved in securing areas of the board by means of positioning stones on the instersections of a 19x19 grid. Further information about the game is available from the introductory and tutorial pages of the BGA site.

Despite its apparent simplicity, and it being one of the first games to be investigated by mathematicians and games theorists, no go-playing computer program has yet been developed which can defeat a strong club player on a full-size (199x19) board. A grading system which involves handicap stones ensures that players of different strengths can play even games.

Members of the Billericay Club attend tournaments held throughout the UK and have taken an active role in the development of go in England.
